The Final leg of the Taman Warisan Melayu Asli Singing competition celebrated its two winners Mahani Mahmod (Adult category) and Irma Yanti Md Nazir (Youth category).
Ms Mahani performed emotion-charged Siti Payong and Irma Yanti renders a power-packed Lela Manja in this glittering event. A total of 12 participants from the Youth and Adult categories were fielded.
The event also saw an unrehearsed tribute to Pak Wandly Yazid, when judges R Ismail and Datuk Yusni Hamid performed a rendition of his legendary song Gurindam Jiwa. We spotted Pak Wandly visibly moved to tears from our place on stage during the performance.
Sri Mahligai provided live music accompaniment throughout the proceeding and Azpirasi dance group led by Azmi Juhari performed 2 dance items.
Sri Mahligai was probably the first ever new-generation Malay music ensemble to backed up a national Asli competition in Singapore, picking up from our predecessors, luminaries such as Pak Shamsudin, Pak Malim, Pak Yahya, Pak Nazir of Orkes Mutiara etc. The previous Jasa '96 organised by Majlis Pusat was backed up by Orkestra Melayu Singapura, which is a full-fledged orchestra.
The judging panel consists of Mr Kassim Masdor (Chief Judge), veterans R Ismail and Nona Asiah and guest judge from Malaysia, Datuk Yusni Hamid. The event was graced by Mr Zainudin Nordin, MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, who even sang Tudung Saji during his speech. A rare occasion indeed, in a night to be remembered.
The event was held at Taman Warisan Melayu auditorium on Saturday 26 Mar 2005 led by Mr Yusnor Ef.
To all participants, we wish to congratulate all of them. Winners all.
